ESSAY ON AN ACCIDENT
Three months ago, I happened to travel by private bus from Kohat to Bannu. The bus started at its appointed time. The weather was pleasant and the bus was. new and comfortable. It was packed to capacity but the conductor insisted on having more passengers on the way. The driver was in low Spirits, perhaps he had not slept the last night• He turned on the tape recorder, partly to shake off his drowsiness and partly for the enjoyment of the passengers. We all felt happy and enjoyed listening to hit songs, unaware of what was hidden for us in the very near future.
We had hardly covered a distance of twenty kilometers when met a road accident. The bus was turning about a blind corner and the driver forgot to slow down it when suddenly there came a military truck from the opposite side. The driver got nervous and instead of applying the brakes, he turned it to the left. The ground was uneven. Some of the passengers started saying the Kalima and some of them began to say the Ayat--ul-Kursi is a loud but trembling voice. The driver lost control over the steering and the bus crashed into a tall tree with a big bang. I was thrown out of my seat and became unconscious.
When I came to my senses, I saw a horrible sight. I felt shooting pain in my left arm. I had received a head injury. My head was bleeding. Two of my ribs were broken. Around me were lying the injured and the dead. The front part of the bus was totally smashed. There was blood everywhere. Three or four ambulances had arrived on the scene. They were busy picking up the victims of the tragedy. I was also placed in one of them and was admitted to C.M.H. Kohat.
I stayed in the hospital for full two weeks. My relatives, teachers, and friends visited the hospital to enquire about my health.
Thank God! I have not lost any limb. But I can never forget what I saw and experienced.
