Ours is the age of science. It has changed the world into a fairyland where wonderful things are happening. It has increased the fertility of the soil. It has destroyed the barriers of time and space. It has invented a large number of things for the comfort of man. But science is not an unmixed blessing for man. It has turned out to be an enemy of man.

Science has brought the industrial revolution. As a result, heavy industries have been set up. Production has increased rapidly and quality has also improved. Most of the physical labor has been shifted to machines. It dealt a death blow to the cottage industry. The result was large-scale unemployment. Industrialists took place of the feudal lords. Laborers were given jobs in factories instead of farms. Science failed to put an end to the exploitation of the poor. This resulted in labor strikes, lock-outs, and the formation of trade unions. Search for new markets to sell the products turned into war-faring.

Scientists began to invent more and more horrible weapons of war. A desperate race for armament began. Innumerable weapons of war have been invented. We can name a few of them: bran-guns, machine-guns, Kalashnikovs, long-range artillery, anti-aircraft guns, rockets and rocket-launchers, guided-missiles, stinger missiles, intercontinental missiles, bombers, fighters, mines, submarines, torpedoes, atom-bombs, hydrogen bombs, neutron bombs, laser and Poisonous gases of various kinds have been manufactured. In 1945 the U.S.A. dropped two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These two bombs brought about such destruction that Japan flew, surrendered unconditionally in the event of the Third World War, it is that not even a single human being will escape death.

 

This scientific progress has been the major cause of pollution. Oil, gas, and coal are very excessively used in running these heavy industries and motor vehicles of various types. As a result of this combustion carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are produced which are highly poisonous gases? The quantity of these gases is increasing and they have damaged the ozone layer. Besides, the waste products of chemical industries and nuclear plants are causing a threat to animal and plant life. Air and water both are polluted. Certain countries have imposed waste disposal tax on chemical industries. Even this is no solution to the problem.

 

The progress of science has created a large number of problems. Man has become a money-making machine. Moral values are considered to be things of the past. Corruption and adulteration are the gifts of science. Members of the Drug Mafia are highly influential. NASA spends billions of dollars on space research programmers, every country allocates maximum funds for defense purposes. As compared to that very little amount of money is spent on education, health, and other social welfare projects.

 

In short, the world is heading towards horrible destruction. The modern man feels very insecure and frustrated. Science has invented such destructive weapons of war that can blow up the whole world in a few hours. It is due to the misuse of science. So, one has to admit that science is the enemy of man, or science has done more harm than good to mankind.
