Essay A Railway Journey
It was the end of March. Our college's Pre-board Examination was over and we were given preparatory leave for the final examination. Ten of my class-fellows decided to go to Quetta by Abasin Express, stay there for a week, and return home refreshed. We contributed Rs.1000/- each. We filled in duplicate two sets of Railway Student Concession Forms one from Peshawar to Quetta and the other from Quetta to Peshawar, got them attested by the Principal of the College, and arranged to have berths reserved in the Second-Class Compartment through the courtesy of one of my friends. We reached the station half an hour earlier and asked the porters to carry our luggage. There was a lot of hustle and bustle at the platform.
The hawkers shouted to sell the eatables. We pushed our way through the crowd, occupied our berths, secured our luggage, and heaved a sigh of relief. The train whistled at the right time, i.e., 5.3Q p.m. The guard blew three whistles and waved the green flag. The train moved and a pleasant breeze came through the window. Soon the congested city area was left behind and the train was passing through green fields and fruit gardens. As it Was an express train, it stopped only at big Stations.
When it was supper time we had our meal in the Dining Car. It was 10.00 p.m. when the train stopped at Rawalpindi. There was a large crowd of passengers at the platform. They jostled and elbowed one another and rushed towards our compartment. They piled up their luggage and stood wherever they could get a standing place. Now the compartment was packed to suffocation. It was my first and very bitter experience of traveling in an economy class.
After half an hour's halt, the train left the station, People were talking loudly and were smoking cigarettes. I was doing for quite a near long time and was awakened now and again by the shouting at the SKY railway stations where the train stopped. But I could not sleep. It was fruit mooning when the train stopped at Lahore junction. Here we got down the train, had potato chips, boiled eggs, and tea. A large number of passengers left the train and many others got into it.
We sat down to buy play at the card when the train moved. Some people 'began to watch us play., From Lahore to Khanewal the ‘train moved very fast. Then it W stopped at Multan. From Multan to Rohri I noticed sand dunes on both are sides of the railway track. At Sukkur, the Ghulam Muhammad Barrage is one of the miracles of modern engineering. We at Rohri the bogeys were divided and two trains were formed. cl My compartment became a part of Quetta Express. The train moved d and it was the night I could not see anything. At Much two engines where is attached to the front and one at the back of the train to pull it to a great height. This place is well known for coal mines and its prison. Now we were in Baluchistan. The day broke and I could see the fruit gardens WC of Quetta and at places, the underground irrigation system also came in view.
By about mid-day we reached Quetta. We were extremely tired and hungry. We took meals at the railway platform. We happened to have a look at the huge marble plate at the platform in which a brief c description of the great earthquake of May 31, 1935, was engraved. O We came out of the railway station, hired a yellow cab taxi, and went straight to the house of my uncle and our journey came to an end.
