A VISIT TO A MUSEUM
A museum is a building where objects illustrating the history of the pastor, things of art or rare beauty or the latest inventions of science and technology, or modern trends in fashion are carefully preserved and aesthetically arranged for exhibition. Museums are generally run by the government. They are a great source of pleasure and profit to the research scholar as well as to the common man. They exchange catalogs so that students and research scholars may know from where to obtain some particular kind of information.
A visit to a museum is an unforgettable and highly interesting experience. That is why I like visiting museums. Two months ago, I came to know that the old building of the Peshawar Museum had recently been renovated and a few rare items of historic value had been added to the archaeological treasure. So, I decided to visit it along with a very close friend of mine.
We went there by bus in the afternoon. This museum lies on the main City - Cantonment Road, near the cantonment railway station. It is a double-story building of brown color. We brought entry tickets for only five rupees each and entered a big hall. We saw various sizes of statues of Buddha, the life story of Buddha, lotus flower worship, caravan scenes, wrestling scenes, from school to marriage, the couple goes around the fire, wreaths, beads, and human and animal figures Vere inscribed on black stone. These articles belonged to the second, third, and fifth centuries A.D. and represented the charm of Gandhara Art. They were chronologically arranged and kept in locked cupboards.
Then we moved on to the large side-rooms. In the center of one of the rooms a model of the ruined city of Takht-i-Bhai was built. Many letters, statues, and scrolls were found during the digging of this archaeological site. These articles belonged to the year 46 A.D. A large number of inscriptions depicting the miracles of Buddha, from pleasures to penance and bridal scenes were carefully preserved in the cupboards. We saw a large variety of toys, heads, lamps, etc. made of clay. A stone model of a stupa or a Buddhist monastery was also very impressive to look at. There were nails, toys, and several other objects made of stone, copper, etc., and gambling stones. On one end of the side room, there was a library but we did not go inside.
Then we climbed up the red-carpeted stairs. We saw a wooden gate beautifully carved, two marble inscriptions relating to the reign of Emperor Shah Jehan, a cupboard full of manuscripts of the Holy Quran, and three cupboards full of Pashto and Persian manuscripts. We saw paintings on paper and specimens of various styles of calligraphy, articles made of wood, a deer horned fly flapper, a boat-shaped water container, two Kashani carpets, and recent decoration pieces of copper and brass.
We went to the other gallery and saw leather shields, a short warrior coat, and the overcoat and trousers of Syed Ahmad Shaheed who was martyred at the hands of the Sikhs at Balakot, Ancient coins on one side and seals on the opposite side were artistically pinned up. They related to 300 B.C. and later times,
There were also wooden horses which were the Funeral effigies of the Kafirs of Chitral. We saw male models wearing Turi dress, Kohistani dress, Mahsud dress, and female models wearing 107 angles. Parents and teachers play a great part in training a child to be a useful member of society. He is taught to obey and how to behave. He is taught what is right and what is wrong. The methods of training are patience, instruction, example, and punishment. Much of his future depends on his observance of discipline in student life. „Child is the father of man" If we have to discipline a man, he should be disciplined as a child. Discipline must be enforced rigorously in schools and colleges the healthy tone of an institution depends upon the degree of discipline that is maintained in it. If the grip of discipline is loosened, regular teaching becomes impossible. It is due to a lack of strong discipline that the standard of our educational institutions 'is going down day by day.
In the same way, domestic animals, such as a dog or a horse, have to be trained before they can be of any use to man. The horses must learn how to carry a man and draw a carriage, and dogs how to guard the house and look after the flock of sheep. Various animals are disciplined for showing excellent performance in the circus.
For leading a successful life, we must discipline ourselves thoroughly. We, must set a goal before ourselves and must work hard to achieve this aim. Mere self-reproach for a wrong action is not enough. We should detect a wrong and try to avoid it in the future. We should learn how to govern and rule ourselves. This.is the hardest task of all and we must read the biographies of great men for this purpose. Serif analysis is also very important. Discipline is a must in the army. An ill-disciplined regiment may bring defeat and shame to the whole nation. A soldier has to obey the order of his superior, even if he knows that he is wrong.
Alfred Tennyson has beautifully depicted a true picture of army discipline in his poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade" There is not to reason why; There is but to do and die. The object of the military drill is to make their obedience to order so perfectly that it should become automatic. Coming to home life, we find discipline playing a very important role. Homes in which family members are not disciplined
Mamia Kalash dress and Chitrali dress. Embroidered bed sheets and other garments were also displayed. A large range of ornaments and gems was also there. Then we saw ancient weapons of war - guns, daggers, swords, spears, arrows and bows, muzzleloading rifles, powder bags, chain coats, and iron helmets. We were surprised at the large variety of daggers.
We saw decoration pieces made of wood, a spinning wheel, and several other articles made of wood. A variety of folk musical instruments like rabab, Sitar clarinet, sarangi, tambour, and drums were also exhibited there. There were many things which I have failed to mention due to lack of space and shortage of time at my disposal In the Examination Hall for which I must show regret.
